The Hunter’s Wife

If you have a husband who hunts, this post is for you.

At 3am, I hear his alarm. The shuffling of him putting his camouflage gear on. A quick kiss on the forehead and off he goes

I can’t sleep. Wondering if he will be ok… Will he bring home a bounty? Will he come back at all?

I toss and turn and pray for his safety. Able to doze off for a few more hours before starting my day.

Filling my time with my own interests and hobbies, but I do think of him and miss my friend.

When he returns after the hunt, I’m thrilled, with or without a bounty. Enjoying the moments I have with him because I know it will be an early night so he can wake up and do it all over again.

Ahhh. A sigh of relief when duck season is over. But Oh wait…. he now tells me it’s bow season for deer and then comes turkey season a few months later. It never really ends.

Although I can’t complain because now we have duck stock, a jar of duck fat, and a freezer filled with meat.

And this makes for one happy girl.

It takes a special woman to be the wife of a hunter. A patient woman.

The hunter wakes up in the wee hours of the morning, leaves his family for hours or days at a time, and rambles on about hunting-related topics.

This is normal to me. This is what I know.

And I wouldn’t change it for the world.

To all of the hunter’s wives out there, I see your patience and your strength.

You are definitely not alone.
