Hello my dear readers! Today I wanted to hop on the blog and post about my favorite way to preserve herbs from the garden.
As I walked around the yard this weekend, I noticed how well the herbs in my potager garden are doing. They are healthy and happy and at their peak – perfect harvesting time!
A few years ago, I remember planting my first herbs. The seasons passed, the plants died, and I realized that I had hardly even used the herbs at all. I thought to myself “What a waste! There’s got to be a way to save these herbs for future use”.
In the heat of the summer, many of our herbs will take a turn for the worst. They just cannot handle our temps in the high 90’s. So while the weather is ideal, now is the time to save some of these herbs to have on hand in those summer months. Even though they won’t quite taste as delicious as fresh herbs do, it will still be so nice to have in the kitchen.
Let’s make hang-dried herb bundles, shall we?
In order to make these cute bundles of herbs. You will need some sort of string or twine. I like use jute twine. I keep it handy for tying up my tomatoes as well (BONUS!)
Step 1:
Gather the herb clippings you want to use. My favorites are thyme, oregano, rosemary, and sage.
Step 2:
Tie the herbs together using string or twine. I like to tie my string into a bow because it’s easier to hang.
Step 3:
Hang your herb bundle upside down for up to 2 weeks. Ideally, keep them inside in a dark place. Usually, I hang the herb bundle on a nail in my pantry. (I know I’m outside in the pictures but that’s only because the lighting was better)
Once they are dried, take the herb leaves off the stem and store in a glass jar in a dark place.
You can just store the herbs individually or mix them together into a blend. (Hello herbs de provence)
