Food, Glorious Food

Did I mention how much we love food in the south? I mean, I'm sure you northerners love food too, but it is a way of life here.

Gumbo, jambalaya, boudin, boiled crawfish – the list goes on and on. Anytime we get together with our family and friends it is surrounded by food.

Appetizers?

Dessert, anyone?

This weekend was filled with laughter, fellowship, and good Louisiana cookin’.

On Friday, Preston and I went to a cajun restaurant in the front of our neighborhood and had our first boiled crawfish of the season. It definitely did not disappoint. They were expensive for crawfish, but it was worth every penny. I think we might even go again this weekend. Spicy. Hot. Delicious.

I grew up in a crawfish family. I can vividly remember as a little girl helping my dad clean and sort the crawfish using this large machine before returning them to their sacks to be boiled. I can even still feel my lungs closing in while breathing in that crab boil seasoning. One inhale, and you are coughing for twenty minutes straight.

Now where was I? Oh, yeah – back to the delicious food we devoured this weekend.

Saturday, I made a nice big pot of chicken and sausage jambalaya with my beautiful, large cast iron dutch oven I got for Christmas this year (Thanks Lauren & Mark!). This thing is heavy duty – I’m pretty sure I pulled a muscle in my neck trying to hold the lid up while stirring. Also a sign that I need to workout because I’m out of shape.

One of these days I’ll make a post about how I make jambalaya.

Superbowl Sunday was no exception, in fact, it was just another reason to get together with our neighbors and FEAST. To be honest, I’m not very much of a sports gal. My husband, on the other hand, adores sports. He wishes I could get into it more, but I am who am I. Know thyself. Our food spread from Sunday was incredible. I made a boudin king cake for the first time and brought some local smoked sausage. Our neighbors smoked a pork butt and smoked mac n cheese. I will be honest, I had never tried smoked mac n cheese before, but it was mouth-watering good! I even snuck some leftovers in a to-go box just so I could eat it for lunch the next day…shh!

Do I sound like a fatty, yet?

Food, glorious food. Where would we be without your wonderful flavors?

Nowhere, I tell you.

I am going to work out now.

Cya.
